Riono Tanggul (b. 1984)
Born in Yogyakarta, works and lives in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Riono Tanggul also known as Tatang, earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta. His artistic practice investigates how ownership, context, and perception shape the value of objects, revealing the fragility and fluidity of worth within social and cultural frameworks.
Working primarily across painting and drawing, Tatang juxtaposes artifacts, statues, herbs, gemstones, animal trophies, and predator hides to explore the construction of value, whether spiritual, material, or aesthetic. His works invite reflection on the commodification of culturally or spiritually significant objects and the shifting boundaries between meaning and materiality in contemporary life.
In 2011, he co-founded Ace House Collective in Yogyakarta, an artist-run initiative that fosters experimentation and collaboration. His works have been presented in numerous exhibitions, including his solo exhibition Di Timur Matahari, kohesi Initiatives, Tirtodipuran Link Yogyakarta (2023), ART SG, kohesi Initiatives, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore (2024), ArtJog, Jogja National Museum, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2019-2020-2021), The Legend of Jogja, Primae Noctis Gallery, Lugano, Italy (2014), Manifesto #4: Keseharian, National Gallery of Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia (2014), Phoning It from Yogyakarta, Space 1026, Philadelphia, United States (2012), Speech Object, Musée de l’Objet, Blois, France (2011), Scope Basel, Basel, Switzerland (2011), The Alleys of City Named Jogja, Primo Marella Gallery, Milan, Italy (2011), Yahoo Purple Project, Singapore (2009).
