Rudy Atjeh Dharmawan (b. 1982)
Born in Langsa, works and lives in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Rudy Atjeh Dharmawan earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Arts from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta. Rudy’s artistic practice explores themes of identity, faith, and personal history, shaped by his upbringing in Aceh, a region defined by Islamic Sharia Law and complex socio-political dynamics. His move to Java marked a pivotal shift in his artistic trajectory, exposing him to a diverse cultural environment that continues to inform his practice. Drawing upon personal narratives and everyday experiences, his practices reflect on the intersections between the self, belief systems, and structures of authority. Deeply influenced by youth culture and music, his works span graphic art, performance, and installation.
Rudy initially worked with paper-based dioramas and stencil techniques before turning to intricate paper cutouts in 2010. This medium has since become central to his practice, appreciated for its precision, fragility, and meditative process. His recent works expand into sculptural paper forms that engage with cultural memory, symbolism, and reinterpretation.
His notable exhibitions include, Broken White Project: Rampak, Ace House Collective, Yogyakarta (2023), Asia Young 36, Jeonbuk Museum of Art, Jeonju, South Korea (2016), San Art Laboratory: Session 5, San Art, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (2014), and Welcome to the Jungle, Kedai Kebun Forum, Yogyakarta (2012).
Rudy is also a founding member of Ace House Collective, established in 2011 in Yogyakarta. The collective critically engages with youth and popular culture through conceptual and contextual artistic practices, continually exploring new possibilities within contemporary visual art.
